504 & IEP Support for Parents

Navigating the school system can feel overwhelming, especially when your child needs extra support. At A Calm Mind Therapy, we help parents understand and advocate for their child’s 504 Plan or IEP (Individualized Education Program). From preparing for meetings to communicating effectively with schools, we guide you through the process so you feel confident, informed, and supported. Our goal is to make sure your child has the tools and accommodations they need to succeed both academically and emotionally.

504 & IEP Support FAQ

1. What’s the difference between a 504 Plan and an IEP?

  • A 504 Plan provides accommodations to help a child with a disability succeed in a general education classroom (like extra test time, seating adjustments, or breaks).

  • An IEP (Individualized Education Program) includes accommodations and specialized instruction or services tailored to a child’s unique learning needs.

2. How can you help with the process?
I support parents by explaining the process, helping prepare questions, reviewing documents, and developing strategies for communicating effectively with schools. I can also guide you in understanding your child’s rights under federal and state education laws.

3. Will you attend school meetings with me?
Yes—if desired, I can attend meetings as part of your support team. Having a professional advocate present helps ensure your child’s needs are clearly understood and supported.

4. Do I need a diagnosis before starting this process?
Not always. Sometimes schools initiate evaluations, but other times parents request them. I can help you understand when and how to start this process and what documentation may be required.

5. Why is outside support helpful?
The school system can feel intimidating, and it’s easy to feel unsure about what to ask for. Having professional guidance gives you confidence, clarity, and the reassurance that you’re not navigating this alone.
